Supporters of a legal battle to lessen the punishment for elected officials who violate the Texas Open Meetings Act have decided to take their case all the way to the United States Supreme Court.
William “Mick” McKamie, one of several attorneys representing 15 local officials from across the state, said they had initially planned to ask the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans to reverse the recent ruling of a three-judge panel in the same court, but they have decided against it.
The Supreme Court is where this fight should be settled, said McKamie, a former assistant city attorney in Lubbock now in private practice in San Antonio.
