It’s nothing new to hear environmental groups raise concerns over the health dangers of hydraulic fracturing – that’s all in a days work. But a new report from Environment Texas questions one aspect of fracking that rarely comes under scrutiny: its supposed economic benefit.
“The Costs of Fracking” collects data from academic and government studies to paint a picture of an industry that may be a bigger drain on state tax money than previously thought. The report looks at things like damage to roads, increased cost for water infrastructure projects, and drilling’s impact on property values in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Hudspeth County Sheriff is a sexist ass
Musicians may want to start taking the long road around Hudspeth County, Texas. After officers arrested Fiona Apple on charges of possessing hashish last week (the latest in a long line of musician arrests there), Apple took to the stage at a concert promising to make the arresting officers "famous."
Now, Rusty Fleming, the public information officer for the Hudspeth County Sheriff's Office, has answered Apple with a letter of his own, which TMZ has printed. In it, he raises the bar for bullying, sexist condescension that doesn't seem especially becoming for an officer sworn to protect the public.

Still Wondering
Does this look like someone who didn't have life threatening injuries? We had a witness tell us when John Laughon arrived at the hospital he was hog tied with shackles with hands and legs behind him. He was lifted from the van by the shackles and laid on his belly on the ground. All he had on was a pair of boxers, the leg to his prison uniform and a blood soaked spit mask. When they were offered assistance to bring him in the hospital, one of the guards said, "Fuck that mother fucker he don't deserve shit." They left him lying on the ground and talked over him. When I saw him he a few hours after he was stabilized he still had dirt in his hair.
I will be posting news articles where the Jacksonville Sheriff's office with claims he had "super-human strength" and more. I will dissect these articles and correct the errors when I post them.

The family of a former Jacksonville inmate filed a lawsuit last week against the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
John Laughon's family claims he is in a vegetative state because of a run-in with a correctional officer in the Duval County jail that took place last February.
The suit claims Laughon was having a seizure, and it was mistaken for an outburst.

Inmate Hospitalized After Jail Officers Attacked
POSTED: 11:12 am EST February 22, 2005 UPDATED: 5:34 pm EST February 22, 2005 JACKSONVILLE -- An altercation in the Duval County jail overnight resulted in an inmate being taken to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center in a life-threatening condition Tuesday, according to Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford.
Four correctional officers were injured trying to subdue the man, including one who may have suffered a broken hand, an official said. The inmate, John G. Laughton who authorities say has mental health problems, was placed in a restraint chair for a cooling-off period at about 2:19 a.m. after he "exhibited a violent episode," according to Chief of Detectives Steve Weintraub.
| Video |
Weintraub said Laughton was left in a cell. He then went into "excited delirium," and used "superhuman strength" to escape the chair, Weintraub said. Once free, he attacked a female corrections officer who went to check on him, and then attacked other officers who came to her assistance, Weintraub said.
Laughton's condition was not released. Weintraub said there was "no outward sign of visible injury."Laughton has been in the jail since November on drug charges. Since his initial arrest, he has been charged with several counts of assault on law enforcement officers as the result of violent struggles in the jail.

It also claims he had been in jail since November 2004 and he turned himself in in January 2005.
Weintraub said there was "no outward sign of visible injury," does this look like there were "no outward sign of visible injury?"

This picture was taken on February 24, 2005 about 36 hours after he arrived at Shands in Jacksonville, Fl. His eyes and head are swollen, blood on the bridge of his nose and he had bruises from head to toe, literally. I guess Weintraub is blind. This was the condition he was in when my mom first saw him after he was stablized.

City, JSO Want Gag Order on Inmate's Family
John Laughon
Ginger Laughon
10/17/2006 11pm report
By Lindy Thackston
First Coast News
JACKSONVILLE, FL -- First Coast News is looking into why the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is trying to keep a First Coast mother from talking.
Ginger Laughon claims her son was beaten into a vegetative state while in the custody of correctional officers in February 2005.
Now, JSO and the City are asking for a gag order, arguing they may not get a fair trial.
Pictures family members say they took of John Laughon in the hospital after a struggle with officers show the 37-year-old with several bruises.
The family attorney told First Coast News that Laughon had broken ribs, collapsed lungs, and bleeding in the brain and chest cavity.
Laughon was serving a six month sentence on drug charges.
His mom says he is now in a persistent vegetative state that could last his lifetime.
Laughon is now on a hospital bed at his mother's house.
"I don't know if he's going to be better," Ginger Laughon told First Coast News earlier this year. "They've really taken his whole life away from him. He can't do anything."
She claims her son was assaulted by officers.
Documents from Shands Hospital show the Emergency Room doctor checked the box for "assault."
Last year, JSO made a statement, saying Laughon left the jail with minor injuries.
"There were no outward signs of visible injuries requiring medical attention, but he was transported to Shands because of his mental health condition," said JSO Chief Steve Weintraub in February 2005.
Since that time, Ginger Laughon and her attorney, Sean Cronin, have been outspoken.
First Coast News has obtained a motion, filed on behalf of JSO and the City of Jacksonville, requesting a gag order on Ginger Laughon and Sean Cronin.
The motion claims "the fairness of the trial is seriously threatened."
Howard Maltz represents the City and JSO.
Maltz would not comment on the motion on camera, saying it defeats the purpose of filing a motion for a gag order.
Maltz did say on the phone that "it's inappropriate for certain lawyers to be trying a case in the media."
Maltz would not elaborate.
NOTES: What is JSO trying to hide? They know if their officers and guards start feeling the heat someone will come forward!

Why are so many San Antonio babies born with syphilis?
Worried about rising numbers of babies born with syphilis in San Antonio, local health officials have begun assigning case workers to follow infected women throughout their pregnancies to ensure proper treatment.
They're urging local doctors and hospitals to test women for syphilis in their third trimester, in addition to the routine test they receive at the first prenatal visit. And they're considering asking state lawmakers to make that second test mandatory in Texas, as it already is for HIV.
Why are Hispanics dying of cancer?
Cancer is now the leading killer of Hispanics in the U.S. — the latest sign it's beginning to displace heart disease as the nation's top cause of death.
The rest of the country may not be far behind, "probably in the next 10 years," said Rebecca Siegel of the American Cancer Society. She is the lead author of a study reporting the new findings.
That may be a conservative estimate. Government health statisticians think cancer could overtake heart disease as the top U.S. killer as early as this year, or at least in the next two or three.
