A former assistant county attorney says she lost her job because she decided to run for a seat on the local school board.
Hilda Gonzalez Garza, who worked as an assistant county attorney, is suing Starr County and County Attorney Victor Canales for unspecified damages and attorney’s fees in federal court. Garza was fired July 20 after Canales found out she was going to run for the Rio Grande City school board, the lawsuit states.
Starr County and Canales denied those allegations in a response filed in court.
