Here's another crazy idea about guns from a Texas republican

The GOP is the stupid party.
So far this legislative session, bills have been discussed to allow for pistol-packing principals, and for concealed handgun permit holders to carry on college campuses. Now a state House member from East Texas wants to allow schools to offer courses on firearms and how to shoot them.
With his House Bill 1142, state Rep. James White, R-Hillister, has further cemented Texas’ pro-gun reputation in the ongoing gun debate, which has heated up since the December shooting in Newtown, Conn. White joins Gov. Rick Perry, Attorney General Greg Abbott and other conservative state leaders who have advocated recently for gun rights.

What an idea. People of color rejoice.
State troopers no longer will shoot from helicopters at fleeing suspects, the head of the Texas Department of Public Safety said Thursday.
The announcement by DPS Director Steve McCraw during testimony before the state House Appropriations Committee came four months after a DPS sharpshooter in a helicopter killed two Guatemalan immigrants as he tried to disable a smuggler's speeding pickup near the Rio Grande Valley town of La Joya.

The last Christmas John enjoyed was in 2004. He spent with his mom, sisters, brother in law, neice, nephew and great nephew. This is a picture of John playing with Mega Blocks with his great nephew, Connor who was only 1 year old at the time.
The only memories Connor has now of his Great Uncle "Greg" (John) is of him lying in his hospital bed at Shands and spending many hours at the hospital visiting him and getting to know all the wonderful nurses and hospital staff. No child should have to have such memories of a loved one.
John spent Christmas 2005 in a hospital bed at Shands Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. thanks to JSO. What a wonderfull bunch of law enforcement officers! NOT!!!

10/17/2006 11pm report
By Lindy Thackston
First Coast News
JACKSONVILLE, FL -- First Coast News is looking into why the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is trying to keep a First Coast mother from talking.
Ginger Laughon claims her son was beaten into a vegetative state while in the custody of correctional officers in February 2005.
Now, JSO and the City are asking for a gag order, arguing they may not get a fair trial.
Pictures family members say they took of John Laughon in the hospital after a struggle with officers show the 37-year-old with several bruises.
The family attorney told First Coast News that Laughon had broken ribs, collapsed lungs, and bleeding in the brain and chest cavity.
Laughon was serving a six month sentence on drug charges.
His mom says he is now in a persistent vegetative state that could last his lifetime.
Laughon is now on a hospital bed at his mother's house.
"I don't know if he's going to be better," Ginger Laughon told First Coast News earlier this year. "They've really taken his whole life away from him. He can't do anything."
She claims her son was assaulted by officers.
Documents from Shands Hospital show the Emergency Room doctor checked the box for "assault."
Last year, JSO made a statement, saying Laughon left the jail with minor injuries.
"There were no outward signs of visible injuries requiring medical attention, but he was transported to Shands because of his mental health condition," said JSO Chief Steve Weintraub in February 2005.
Since that time, Ginger Laughon and her attorney, Sean Cronin, have been outspoken.
First Coast News has obtained a motion, filed on behalf of JSO and the City of Jacksonville, requesting a gag order on Ginger Laughon and Sean Cronin.
The motion claims "the fairness of the trial is seriously threatened."
Howard Maltz represents the City and JSO.
Maltz would not comment on the motion on camera, saying it defeats the purpose of filing a motion for a gag order.
Maltz did say on the phone that "it's inappropriate for certain lawyers to be trying a case in the media."
Maltz would not elaborate.
NOTES: What is JSO trying to hide? They know if their officers and guards start feeling the heat someone will come forward!

Lets have some common decency.
The new scrutiny from civil rights groups underscores the sudden spike in migrant deaths in South Texas, where 129 people were found dead in Brooks County in 2012, more than doubling 2011 deaths. At least 47 went unidentified, filling the county cemetery to capacity with nameless graves.
The advocates said the county's failure to order DNA testing violates state law and robs anguished families of the chance to confirm what happened to their loved ones.

La Joya school board trustees reached a settlement agreement with a former high-ranking administrator last week that pays her $150,000 to quit her job.
Adriana Villarreal, who was an assistant superintendent for student services when she resigned and previously oversaw the human resources department, filed a sexual harassment complaint in December against current human resources director Rick Villarreal. She also filed a complaint with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Crony capitalists abuse Perry's cancer slush fund money

No surprise there. That's the way republicans roll.
The recipient of the biggest grant given by the state’s cancer-fighting agency had spent $1.3 million — or one-sixth of its taxpayer money — on nonallowable costs such as bonuses, moving expenses and honorariums for board members before it ceased operations, Texas lawmakers were told Wednesday.Meanwhile, public testimony of CPRIT is suspended in order to 'protect a criminal investigation'. That makes absolutely no sense to me. Why would individuals get immunity for testifying to the Texas Legislature? Why wouldn't you want their testimony on record. The more statements the better.

Lawmakers set to hold teachers to a higher disclosure standard than themselves

Or, to their cronies in school regents. Disclosure standards? Great. Lets have them for the legislators and the university system regents, too. No more paid for research results is a great idea.
In an effort to prevent the perception of any conflicts of interest, the University of Texas System could soon subject its faculty and staff members to more robust public disclosure requirements than lawmakers and even university system regents.
On Jan. 15, UT System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa issued a memo to the president of each of the system’s 15 institutions that laid out new system policies and included new model disclosure forms for all faculty, staff and administrators engaged in board and business activities outside their universities.
“Over the past several years, at public and private universities, the public trust has been tested when faculty do not completely disclose even perceived conflicts of interest,” Cigarroa told The Texas Tribune.

Builders, Texas, windstorm engineers out of sync

Having a rigorous process is a great idea. Have engineers certified shoddy work in the past?
Bill Underbrink, a homebuilder and small-businessman, sometimes wonders on whose side the bureaucrats sit.
Underbrink built three, quarter-million dollar brick homes in Ingleside that put him in a financial hole caused by a disconnect between state-certified windstorm engineers who design and inspect homes on the Texas coast and the Texas Department of Insurance that manages the process.
Hundreds of state-licensed engineers, many frustrated with the Texas Department of Insurance, are dropping out of the windstorm certification program that allows structures to be insured by the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association.
Last year, more than 900 engineers participated in the program. As of Feb. 15, there were 201, according to a list available on the Texas Department of Insurance website.
La Joya ISD workers claim political pay back

Sounds bad. Bad management or payback?
Zamora and Perez are among a group of workers who claim they were reassigned to distant campuses or demoted as political retaliation in the months following La Joya school board elections in November. At least 12 workers who spoke with The Monitor or provided reassignment letters through union representatives said they have been punished by the district for supporting the losing incumbent slate.
The district, through attorney Jaime Muñoz, denied any occurrence of retaliation.
“Everybody had their individual performance and duties that were taken into consideration prior to them being reassigned,” he said. “You’re asking for a global answer with respect to everybody; there won’t be one.”
At least eight workers in the Child Nutrition Services Department and four from Custodial Services said they were transferred or demoted. A public information officer was also notified Feb. 11 she would be transferred to a marketing position with the Athletics Department.

Ted Cruz, elected Senator, thinks he's Rush Limbaugh

How lovely.
Tea Party Texas Sen. Ted Cruz made his big-time national debut today hectoring Defense nominee Chuck Hagel, the former GOP senator, and the righty blogs ate it up, even if the rest of the world scratched its head, and fact-checkers took apart his claims.
Armed with silly props, Cruz hit Hagel with appearances on Al Jazeera in which Hagel appeared to agree with callers who attacked the U.S. or Israel, plus an interview in which he described Israel’s 2006 military campaign against Lebanon as “sickening slaughter.”
Reporters quickly showed that Cruz distorted Hagel’s replies to the Al Jazeera callers, either by leaving out the context of his answers or truncating them. Slate’s Dave Weigel showed that Cruz also took the “sickening slaughter” quote out of context – he actually attacked “sickening slaughter on both sides,” acknowledging the role of Hezbollah rockets in triggering and then escalating the ugly conflict.

Now who's on the wrong side of a public fight? Nice to see all of the hate the republicans pushed going back at them.
State Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa on Thursday said a same-sex union bill he filed earlier this week has elicited strong reactions from constituents on both sides of the issue.
Very little of the feedback, he said, has been middle of the road.
The McAllen Democrat on Monday filed the bill that now is in the Senate Committee on State Affairs. State Rep. Lon Burnham, D-Fort Worth, on Thursday filed a similar bill in the state House.
