'Hidalgo sheriff declines raise'
Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño declined an adjustment to his salary, saying raises for elected officials should instead be spent on the county’s rank-and-file employees.

Treviño, slated to receive a $4,100 salary increase under the county’s proposed budget, wrote a letter to county commissioners this month that said he agreed to delay opening his office’s Mid-Valley substation as a cost-cutting measure. But “the deal was not brokered to give elected officials a hefty pay raise,” the sheriff wrote.
