JACKSONVILLE, FL-- John Laughon had big dreams. He wanted to travel the country with his family, but his family didn't count on one thing.
Fifteen months ago, Laughon was serving a six month sentence for a drug charge. While there, Laughon got into an altercation with corrections officers.
The JSO says the officers were restraining him as he attacked them.
The States Attorney's office investigated and found the corrections officers committed no criminal action.
Fifteen months after the incident, Laughon is finally out of the hospital. He is still in a vegetative state is now resting at home.
"I don't know if he's going to be better. They really have taken his whole life away from him. He can't do anything," says Ginger Laughon, John's mother.
Most of his day is spent asleep, but there are moments when he awakes and finds his family watching over him.
"He knows who I am immediately," says his mother.
John is fed through a feeding tube. There are more than a handful of medications to take every couple of hours.
Right now, his mom and sisters are his nurses and are responsible for his rehabilitation.
They say his insurance is covering the medical bills, but the bills are piling up and they fear the insurance money will run out.
"She's not going to have the money to take care of him and not get him the therapy he needs," says his sister, Valerie Seara.
The Laughon's have hired an attorney and have filed an intent to sue JSO.
The family wanted to bring John home to give him peace and to let him know one thing, "We'd be devastated without him. I want him to know, no matter what happens we love him."
His mom also says there is always that hope that one day her son will live out his dream of traveling the country.
